Fall in Upstate New York means colorful leaves, crisp mornings, and cooler nights—but it also means winter isn’t far behind.

Before freezing temperatures, snow, and ice arrive, fall is the perfect time to take care of a few important home maintenance tasks. A little preparation now can help protect your home, improve energy efficiency, and potentially prevent costly repairs later.

Whether you own a home in Cobleskill, Middleburgh, Schoharie, Richmondville, Worcester, or elsewhere in Upstate New York, here are some important items to add to your fall home maintenance checklist.

1. Clean Your Gutters and Downspouts

Falling leaves can quickly clog gutters and downspouts. When water can't drain properly, it may overflow or freeze, potentially contributing to ice dams and water damage.

Remove leaves and debris, check that gutters are securely attached, and make sure downspouts direct water away from your home's foundation.

2. Have Your Heating System Checked

Don't wait for the first freezing night to discover a problem with your heating system.

Fall is a good time to have your furnace, boiler, or other heating equipment inspected and serviced. Replace dirty filters where applicable and make sure vents and heating areas aren't blocked.

If your home has a fireplace or wood stove, consider having the chimney inspected and cleaned before the heating season begins.

3. Check Windows and Doors for Drafts

Cold air entering around windows and doors can make your home less comfortable and force your heating system to work harder.

Inspect weatherstripping and caulk around windows and exterior doors. Small improvements can make a noticeable difference once temperatures drop.

4. Prepare Outdoor Faucets and Plumbing

Freezing temperatures can cause serious damage to plumbing.

Disconnect garden hoses, drain outdoor faucets where appropriate, and winterize exterior plumbing or irrigation systems. If you have pipes in particularly cold areas of your home, check that they're adequately protected before winter.

5. Inspect Your Roof

Your roof is your home's first line of defense against snow, ice, and winter weather.

Look for missing, damaged, or loose shingles and other visible signs of wear. It's much easier to address a small roofing issue in the fall than during a January snowstorm.

For areas that aren't safely visible from the ground, consider calling a professional rather than climbing onto the roof yourself.

6. Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

As homes close up for the colder months and heating systems begin running more frequently, fall is an important time to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Replace batteries when needed and check the manufacturer's recommendations for replacing older detectors.

7. Get Your Yard Ready for Winter

Fall yard maintenance isn't just about appearance.

Clear leaves and debris from areas around the house, trim dead or damaged branches that could become a problem during heavy snow or high winds, and put away outdoor furniture and equipment that could be damaged by winter weather.

If you have a long driveway or rural property, now is also a good time to make sure snow-removal equipment is ready to go.

8. Check Your Home's Exterior

Walk around your property and take a close look at siding, foundations, decks, porches, steps, and railings.

Watch for cracks, loose materials, peeling finishes, or areas where water may collect. Catching small problems before repeated freezing and thawing can help keep them from becoming bigger ones.

9. Prepare for Winter Storms

Upstate New York winters can be unpredictable, so it's worth preparing before the first major storm arrives.

Check flashlights and batteries, make sure snow shovels and ice melt are accessible, service your snowblower if you have one, and consider what you'll need if a storm causes a temporary power outage.

A Little Fall Maintenance Can Go a Long Way

Fall home maintenance may not be the most exciting part of homeownership, but taking care of your property now can help you head into winter with fewer surprises.

And if you're thinking about selling your home, seasonal maintenance matters for another reason: a well-maintained property can make a stronger impression when it's time to enter the real estate market.
