The History of Middleburgh, NY

Middleburgh’s roots date back to the early 1700s, making it one of the oldest settled communities in Schoharie County. The area was originally settled around 1712 by German Palatine immigrants led by Johan Conrad Weiser. The original settlement was known as “Weiser’s Dorf” and became one of the first Palatine settlements in the Schoharie Valley. 

The fertile farmland surrounding Middleburgh quickly became an important agricultural center. By the time of the American Revolution, the Schoharie Valley was producing tens of thousands of bushels of grain and earned the nickname “Bread Basket of the Revolution.” 

During the Revolutionary War, Middleburgh played a critical role in defending the valley. In 1777, the Middle Fort was constructed just north of the village to protect settlers from British and Loyalist raids. The famous Johnson-Brant raid of 1780 devastated much of the region, burning homes, farms, and churches throughout the valley. 

Following the war, Middleburgh rebuilt and continued to grow as a farming and trade center. During the 1800s, the town became known for agriculture, mills, local businesses, and eventually railroad access through the historic Middleburgh & Schoharie Railroad.
